Festival ORFF AT ANDECHS (since 1992)

“A Weekend with Music” came at the instigation of Andechs’s Monastery Prior and Cellerar Pater Anselm Bilgri in 1992. Initially, he conceived of it as a biennial event presenting the works of Carl Orff in abbridged versions, primarily involving the chamber music works of the Bavarian Master in a two-year cycle.  In order to support this biennial memorial event, the association “Orff in Andechs e.V.” was founded in 1993 as producer.

A decisive impulse was given the Orff-Biennial in 1997 when Prof. Dr. Hellmuth Matiasek, former State Intendant of the Theater at the Gärtnerplatz in Munich was appointed Artistic Director. Presently serving as president of the August Everding Memorial Bavarian Theater Academy and the director of the Prinzregenten Theater in Munich, Dr. Hellmuth Matiasek brings decades long experience in Music, dance and theater to Andechs. The Florian-Stadl on the Holy Mount thus turned into the permanent location for Carl Orff festivals, with an unmistakable atmosphere of both traditional and modern Benedictine hospitality offered on one of the loveliest spots along the Alpine foothills of Upper Bavaria.

In 1998, what had started out as a “weekend with music,” became a series of performances which stretched themselves out over a three week period resulting in the debut of Orff’s  “music-world theater” piece DER MOND/The Moon is a brand-new Andechs production. The unexpectedly positive response to the performances encouraged the restructuring of the old biennial production concept and the initiation of an annual summer festival.

Since then the conceptual focal point of the Orff-Festivals is the production of works from Carl Orff’s cycle of “Bavarian-World Theater.” At this point, DER MOND/The Moon and DIE BERNAUERIN Agnes Bernauer have been produced with great success on the Florian-Stadl stage. The latter of the two was honored with an invitation to perform at the Hannover 2000 EXPO during the course of the Bavarian Week celebrations in the German Pavillion to a sold-out house.

Based on the great enthusiasm and request for tickets, the Orff-Festival 2001 will present 17 performances of DIE BERNAUERIN and DER MOND from June into August, thus lending the Orff Festival a magnitude of international character.

In the meantime, the constantly expanding Florian-Stadl complex, which has gone through several enlargements and refinements since 1997, presents itself as an ideal venue for both musical and straight theater productions as well as an excellent location in which to hold lectures, concerts and special events for supplementary activities enhancing other Andechs programs.

”The 2003 season was a smashing success with the revival of DIE KLUGE and DIE BERNAUERIN – reflecting an ongoing tradition in Andechs just like with the JEDERMANN play in Salzburg – plus concert performances of CARMINA BURANA/ MISA CRIOLLA (Ariel Ramirez). The Munich Symphony and the Munich University Choir appeared for the first time at the festival, under the direction of Heiko Mathias Förster.

The introductions to the works of each performance were also very well received, and these will be offered again in the next season along with the shuttle bus service for the train (S-Bahn) to Herrsching.

The 2003 season concluded on the first August weekend, following a total of 17 performances attended by well over 10.000 patrons”.
