DIE BERNAUERIN

In the year 1944, Carl Orff began work on the piece, “Die Bernauerin” or Agnes Bernauer.  Seeing the succession to the Bavarian throne endangered by the inappropriate marriage of his son Duke Albrecht III with the beautiful Agnes Bernauer, the daughter of a commoner, namely the bath-master of Augsburg, Albrecht’s father, the reigning Duke Ernst von Bayern, arranged to have his daughter-in-law drowned as a witch in the Danube. This occurred in 1435. In repentance for his father’s cruel deed, Albrecht founded Andechs Monastery on Bavaria’s Holy Mountain.
