Andechs Monastery is the economic foundation of the Benedictine Abbey St. Bonifaz in Munich. In order to provide a material source support for St. Bonifaz Abbey, (which is located right in the heart of Munich in the Karlstrasse), King Ludwig I. bought Andechs Monastery in 1846; he gave it in its entirety including its cultivated acreage in 1850 as a gift to the Benedictine St. Bonifaz Abbey which he has recently founded. St. Bonifaz’s Convent Library, which was important for the spiritual life of Munich from the time of its founding, provided room for more than 150.000 volumes of theological and scientific works which are available to the public. At this time 22 monks inhabit the Abbey of whom 14 live in Munich and 8 in Andechs. St. Bonifaz Abbey belongs to the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation. Dr. Johannes Eckert has been the Abbot of St. Bonifaz and Andechs since 2003. Previous Abbots
