Bräustüberl Historic Landmarks
The original Bräustüberl became too small for the increasing numbers of pilgrims and visitors.  When the new maltings area was built for the brewery in 1906 - 1907, the Gewölbe Room - and then in 1938 the spacious Salettl area, in which the taps are located - were expanded.
Until the Second World War, the monks themselves served the beer from storage barrels located behind the original Bräustüberl. They also sold it to the visitors who came to the monastery to pick up their own Andechs beer.
With the beginning of the Second World War the Bräustüberl had to be closed down. It was re-opened on St. Joseph's Day, March 19th, 1952. Then, as now, albeit modernized and expanded, visitors stood on line for self service at the "Kiosk" a tradition which continues to this day.

Because of the ever-increasing number of visitors, further enlargement became necessary in 1970. The Old Maltings segment on the eastern overhang of the Sacred mountain were incorporated. Where once the brewing barley malts were made is today the roomy Wappensal or "Coat of Arms Room" and the smaller  "Mälzer-Stüberl". In this area is a bakery in which fresh pretzels and "Ausgezogne" (sweet, elongated hot pastry) are freshly made as well as other sweet delicacies.
The East Terrace was added to this area at Easter, 1998. The outside area between the buildings with a view of the Bavarian Alpine foothills is used as the Bräustüberl-Terrace. Six oversized parasols which double as umbrellas allow guests to enjoy the terrace on rainy as well as sunny days.

Throughout the Bräustüberl and on the terraces visitors are allowed to bring their own refreshments in the time honored manner of pilgrims visiting a consecrated place. And to enjoy the Andechs beer.

Of course you also have the opportunity to take home souvenir packages of Andechs Beer in the 4-bottle gift package, you select which beers you wish. Or take one of each in the 7-bottle sampler. Both packages are availabe for purchase in the Bräustüberl.

The Grützner-Stübel (named for the well-known painter Eduard Grützner who was responsible for the complete renovation and decoration of the premises in the 1970's) is available for private gatherings and is part of the overall Bräustüberl offering.

Notwithstanding its many expansions and changes, the Bräustüberl stills retains its own typically Andechs style.

We look forward to your visit!
