ANDECHS MONASTRY - A SPIRITUAL CENTER

Seen from miles around atop Holy Mountain above the eastern bank of Ammer Lake, Andechs Monastery is the oldest pilgrimage church in Bavaria and since 1850, an asset of the Benedictine monastery, St. Boniface, in Munich.

The Benedictines have supervised the pilgrimage since 1455. They live according to the Rule of St. Benedict, which is neatly epitomized by the motto, “ora et labora” (pray and work). At Holy Mountain, the monastic community is involved with the religious welfare of the pilgrims and the pastoral care of the neighboring communities, as well as the management of the business enterprise.

As an economic asset and in accordance to the charter issued by King Louis I, Andechs Monastery generates income for the maintenance and upkeep of Saint Boniface Abbey in Munich and Andechs. The monastery does not receive church tax income. The director of the monastery is Abbot Dr. Johannes Eckert. Together with its monks, over 200 male and female employees are involved in the ongoing development of the monastery and its economic enterprise.
